About The Event

Dmetri Kakmi is a Turkish-born, ethnic Greek, Australian essayist, reviewer, speaker, broadcaster, editor and author. He was born on the island of Tenedos to Greek parents. Dmetri Kakmi is the author of Mother Land and The Door and Other Uncanny TalesHis essays and short stories have appeared in newspapers, journals and other anthologies.

Living paintings, spectral children, cannibal serial killers, lost souls, haunted houses, and ancient evil proliferate The Door and Other Uncanny Tales. Everywhere reality and fantasy collapse to create a new unstable world, even the body is not what it seems. Combined with Dmetri Kakmi’s gothic imagination and mordant humor, the result is fiction that is as memorable as it is unsettling. This collection contains three new and three previously published stories, including the acclaimed Haunting Matilda, The Long Lonely Road and The Boy by the Gate.

Kate Hazel Hall (she/her) writes fiction and non-fiction. Her debut YA novel, From Darkness, released in November 2020 from Duet Books (Interlude Press, New York). Kate is a university tutor who spends as much time as possible in or near the Southern Ocean. When not writing or in the water, she likes to sketch her settings and characters, because doodling, especially in the margins, is another excellent way of imagining and telling stories.

Set on the Australian coast, and in the classical underworld, From Darkness is a genre-bending sapphic love story about girls saving the world, and each other, from the powers of darkness. It has been selected as a young adult category finalist in Foreword Reviews' prestigious 2020 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards!

This is part of the Port Fairy Winter Weekends program. There will be an open bar at this event.
