SUMMARY:Susan Orlean: Joyride
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed writer Susan Orlean returns to Melbourne to reflect on a remarkable career of curiosity and storytelling.\nSusan Orlean is widely regarded as one of the great narrative non-fiction writers of her generation. Best known for The Orchid Thief – turned into the popular 2002 film Adaptation – and The Library Book\, she has also spent decades as a beloved writer for The New Yorker. Guided by an insatiable curiosity\, she has built a remarkable career finding extraordinary stories in unexpected places. \nIn Joyride\, Orlean turns her keen eye towards her own life\, reflecting on a body of work shaped by curiosity\, observation and an enduring fascination with the people and world around her. Hailed by David Sedaris as ‘wise and exuberant’\, the book is both a celebration of a life in writing and a testament to the wonder that comes from paying close attention. \nJoin Orlean in conversation with host Jaclyn Crupi as she reflects on the art of finding stories worth telling.

SUMMARY:Radio Laria Poetry with Christine Burrows and Tariro Mavondo
DESCRIPTION:This October Radio Laria feature poets\, Christine Burrows and Tariro Mavondo\, will shake\, stir and nourish your soul. Christine is a queer\, neurodivergent migrant whose work explores place\, dislocation\, the notion of ‘home’\, loss\, grief\, environmental justice and ageing. Tariro is a Zimbabwean born Frankston raised creative who has worked as an award-winning actor\, spoken word poet\, voice over artist\, facilitator\, theatre maker and director. We also have ten open mic spots where you can share in front of the magical\, shining bookshelves at Library Portal (opposite no. 11 Hawthorn Rd\, Naarm/Northcote). Tickets are $10 (full)\, $5 (concession) or you can choose a generous ticket if you would like to help us support the poets and our venue Library Portal.\nhttps://events.humanitix.com/radio-laria-poetry-christine\nDoors open 7pm and the live poetry kicks off at 7:30\nEveryone is welcome to share on the open mic\, there’s a five-minute limit\, sign up on the night and arriving early is recommended for sign up. The audience is very supportive\, and we welcome new readers. Men are welcome to share on the open mic\, but please be mindful that this is a night to promote women and women-identifying poets\, so we ask that you behave respectfully. If you have another form of performance art\, writing or storytelling that could be shared in five minutes\, then we’d love to hear it!\nLibrary Portal is a grassroots community centre run by volunteers for passionate readers and art groups. You can help yourselves to free tea\, but there is no licensed bar. We are allowed to BYO drink/food as long as we are mindful that it is not a party space. This space is also right next to an apartment block\, so we need to please leave quietly at the end of the night.\nLocation: Library Portal is opposite no. 11 Hawthorn Road (Naarm/Northcote\, 3070) at the back of a large\, brick orthodox church. It is easiest to find from Hawthorn Road rather than approaching the church from the front. If you approach from opposite no. 11\, there is a gateway in the fence (which is a little hard to see in the dark until you are right opposite no. 11). Once you have entered this fence gap\, you will walk up a driveway with apartments on your left and then cross a green lawn. You will then see some hills host washing lines to your right and the doorway to Library Portal is to the left of those up a ramp.\nAccessibility: Front entrance and performance space are wheelchair accessible.
