SUMMARY:Don Watson – The United States: Sacred and Profane
DESCRIPTION:The United States: Sacred and Profane\n\nA Readings and UMAC special event\n\n‘These were indeed strange times. Yet the forces at work in them were not new. Men like Donald Trump are embedded in US history\, mythology and popular culture. Rank populists\, hucksters\, fakers\, grifters\, rent-seekers\, blowhards\, tycoons\, kleptocrats\, narcissists\, psychopaths and delinquents – or\, from the other point of view\, rugged individualists\, entrepreneurs\, men of vision\, men of destiny\, instruments of God. No diorama of mainstream American life in any era could be without them.’ – Don Watson\, The Shortest History of the United States of America\n\nJoin Don Watson as he traces how the central conflicts of the United States – those over freedom\, race\, frontiers\, enterprise\, religion and violence – play out through its history: a country at war with itself in the 1860s\, the leader of the free world less than a hundred years later\, and a nation beset by wild division and turmoil in the twenty-first century.\n\n‘Don Watson’s Shortest History of the United States is a masterpiece of concision and analysis that extracts the DNA from the body politic and locates both the resilience and the pathologies in its genes. Nothing else I have read explains the sources of our current dilemmas as a nation more astutely. Every American should read it; it should be on the curriculum of every high school.’ – Judith Thurman\n\nProf Michael Wesley; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Culture & Engagement) will introduce Don Watson.\n\nThe bar opens at 5pm.

SUMMARY:Creative Mindset Masterclass | Play\, Experimentation and Permission

Expect terrible opening lines\, deliberately bad paragraphs and your own permission slip to sign. \nWhat we’ll cover: \n\nWhy play fuels creative breakthrough\, even in high-stakes writing\nWhat’s been blocking your permission to experiment\nFive practical strategies for bringing play back into your writing life\nYour own ready to use permission practice\n\nFormat\n60 minutes combining teaching\, reflection exercises\, chat discussions\, live silly exercises\, and Q&A. Cameras optional. Recording available with no time limit. \nInvestment\n\n$20 single session\n$180 12 month pass (10+ masterclasses + monthly mindset newsletter)\n\nFor writers who’ve made their craft so important they’ve forgotten how to enjoy it. \nAbout Meg Dunley\nMeg Dunley is a writing and creativity coach who has spent years helping writers build sustainable\, joyful creative practices. Her belief in the power of play isn’t theoretical\, it goes back to her mum\, a kindergarten teacher who built her entire world around the idea that play is how humans figure things out. Meg has carried that into her own creative life in some deliberately unpolished ways: she took up jazz piano as an adult purely for the joy of it (she never mastered it\, and that’s the point)\, and did weekly improv classes mostly so she had a reason to laugh out loud for two hours. She brings that same spirit of low-stakes experimentation to her coaching and to this masterclass.

SUMMARY:Matter\, mind\, metaphor
DESCRIPTION:How can we develop conscious methods of translating experience into resonant storytelling? How might we examine everyday perceptions to generate and renew our approach to making language\, image and narrative? \nThis online writing course is structured over 20 weeks (5 months) and centred on methods of durational journalling. By slowing down the writing process\, we will model\, practice and evaluate approaches to finding motif\, symbol and metaphor; seeking voice and perspective; and moving between nonfiction and fiction modes.

SUMMARY:Second Edition: Winter Holiday Program 2026
DESCRIPTION:Something strange is happening in Footscray. Quiet rumours\, late-night sightings\, footprints that don’t quite match anything in the books. We need journalists. \nSecond Edition is a one-day workshop for teenagers who keep to themselves and notice things: the quiet observers\, the late-night readers\, the ones with know-how and a soft spot for the unexplained. Together\, we’ll piece together a real newspaper documenting the mysterious creatures said to roam Footscray’s backstreets\, train lines and creek beds. \nOver the day you’ll investigate\, write\, sketch\, paint and cut-and-paste collaged “evidence” into something part zine\, part field journal\, part tabloid conspiracy paper. You’ll work alongside other contributors rather than on top of them: collaboration without the small talk\, with space to think and disappear into your piece. \nNo experience needed. Just curiosity\, a bit of courage and a hunch that there’s more to Footscray than meets the eye.

SUMMARY:Good Intentions by Jessy Wu
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to have Dee Salmin host the launch of Jessy Wu’s Good Intentions.\n\nTheir first kiss was not without technical shortcomings. His glasses bumped against the bridge of her nose and her back pressed uncomfortably against the edge of a filing cabinet. But as she inhaled the scent of his aftershave\, Nadia was struck with the kind of certainty that only visits upon twenty-two-year-olds. Somehow she knew that for as long as she lived\, there would never be another kiss as perfect or as profound.\n\nClear-eyed and taut\, Good Intentions announces a blistering new voice in Australian fiction\, asking what it takes to stay true in a world that demands compromise\, and what happens when the person who once saw you most clearly becomes the one who threatens to topple everything you’ve built.\n\nFree\, but bookings are essential.

SUMMARY:Tight Lines by Allee Richards
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to host the launch of Allee Richards’ latest novel\, Tight Lines.\n\nLuke\, Josh and Matty live for the summer: surfing\, fishing\, girls at the caravan park and drinking. But\, like the wild coast they call home\, the tide can change from safe to catastrophic in an instant. Just as adulthood is about to begin\, one terrible decision will ruin the lives of all involved. We follow the characters into adulthood as they try to find their way back to the freedom they took for granted when they were young. But life moves on\, and they each discover they can never go back to the way things were.\n\nTight Lines is a moving and transformational novel that explores friendship\, family\, expectation and how one choice can have devastating and far-reaching consequences.\n\nFree\, but bookings are essential.

SUMMARY:Cynthia Banham in conversation
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you to hear a conversation between Cynthia Banham and Kate Halfpenny.\n\nCynthia Banham’s Mother Shadow opens with the uncovering of a family secret. The author’s great-grandmother was not an orphan\, as she’d been told\, but a foundling\, relinquished at birth by a mother who ‘did not consent to be named’. The discovery of the abandoned baby in her maternal line triggers a passionate and indignant reaction as she asks: what kind of a mother would relinquish her child? It also triggers a painful personal memory of the day she dropped her baby after falling backwards in her wheelchair and realised her worst fear. That her broken body\, permanently injured in a plane crash in her early 30s\, could not be trusted to protect her baby.\n\nMother Shadow is a meditation on what it means to be a ‘good mother’ where two women – separated by continents and time but connected by blood – each find themselves enchained by social and personal forces that seek to limit them.\n\nFree\, but bookings are essential.
