SUMMARY:Speculate: Workshop\, Lunch and Launch
DESCRIPTION:What is the role of fiction in regenerative futures? How can writing speculatively help us imagine and inhabit the future?  \nIn a limited capacity workshop\, hear from novelists Romy Ash (Mantle) and Rose Michael (Else)\, whose work stretches the familiar and the real into the speculative\, strange and urgent.   \nThen\, drawing from the raw material of your own embodied experience\, Nicola Redhouse and Penni Russon will guide participants through associative writing techniques using a series of provocations to write ‘otherwise’\, grounded in the speculative powers of the human unconscious.   \nAt 12pm\, celebrate new voices of speculative fiction with the launch of the 2026 Speculate anthology\, featuring long-listees and readings from the prize-winners of this emerging writers’ prize presented in partnership with RMIT.   \nA light lunch will be provided.   \nPlease note that the Workshop will take place in the Level 4 Workshop Space\, with the Lunch & Launch in the Level 2 Performance Space

SUMMARY:Reimagining the Archives
DESCRIPTION:The archives are rich places for understanding our history. But for many marginalised people\, archival stories are only told through police reports\, medical documents\, and institutional records. These documents are all told from the perspectives of those in power. How can archival research be used to recover and reimagine the voices that dominant narratives have tried to silence?  \nIn this workshop\, experiment with approaches that foreground gaps\, silences\, and bias\, and consider how form can challenge those narratives. Through discussion and creative exercises\, explore how to write with\, around\, and against the archive to create work that is thoughtful\, self-aware\, and open to multiple histories.

SUMMARY:Sonia Orchard and Louise Milligan in conversation
DESCRIPTION:We are honoured to welcome Sonia Orchard for a conversation with journalist and author Louise Milligan\, about her new book\, Before the Harm: Preventing Abuse\, Protecting Children\, the latest in MUP’s In the National Interest series.\n\nBefore the Harm starts a conversation that is long overdue: child sexual abuse is one of Australia’s most widespread and devastating public health crises\, with children more exposed than ever\, from the privacy of the family home to the unpoliced corners of the internet. But there is some hope in this darkest of topics: CSA is preventable\, but – as Before the Harm outlines – prevention requires political courage and real investment in support programmes.\n\nDrawing on interviews with leading voices including Jess Hill\, Grace Tame and Professors Ben Mathews\, Michael Salter and Daryl Higgins\, alongside research and accounts from survivors and offenders\, Sonia Orchard reframes one of our most confronting social issues and shows that protecting children begins long before a crime is committed.\n\nPlease note that some members of our community may find this event distressing and are advised to consider the impact of hearing more about this topic.\n\nFree\, but bookings are essential.

Experiment with fragments\, uncertainty\, and emotional truth\, while considering how place\, longing\, and inherited narratives shape the stories we tell.   \n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with

SUMMARY:Salon After D'Arc: How Memory Makes Meaning
DESCRIPTION:Why do some moments stay with us\, while some fade away?  \nSalon After D’Arc returns in 2026 with 4 thought-provoking evenings exploring the forces that shape how we love and remember.    \nJoin host Jamila Rizvi (Deputy Managing Director of Future Women) for our final event in the series\, How Memory Makes Meaning\, as we explore the ways in which we remember and how memories are constructed.  \nDrawing on her own research and professional experience\, Professor Yen Ying Lim will kick off the evening\, delving into how memory is formed\, stored and recalled\, and what contemporary medical and scientific research can tell us about memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease.  \nDiscover how scent is deeply tied to memory and it can connect you with old memories and help you create new ones through a powerful scent meditation led by Erin Adams\, founder of Smell Art. Erin will then lead you on a guided scent tour of the Dome before a meaningful reflection activity.  \nIn conversation with writer Astrid Edwards\, Jamila will share her personal journey of how she navigated a brain tumour diagnosis. \nThe Salon After D’Arc series is generously supported by the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust. It is an opportunity to delve deeper into interesting topics\, make connections in the beautiful surrounds of the Library and view rare books acquired through the Women Writers Fund initiative.   \nPresented in State Library Victoria’s 170th year\, Salon After D’Arc invites audiences to consider not only the stories we inherit\, but those still being written\, and whose voices are finally being brought to the forefront.   \nPlus\, don’t miss out on a special collection viewing from 6.30pm.    \nBook your tickets now.   \n  \nPlease note: This event is for people aged 18 and over and may contain adult themes. SUMMARY:Down the Rabbit Hole

How do we establish a structure\, meet a theme\, or worse still\, a deadline? Join Chloe Mayne and Carl Walsh for a roundtable discussion exploring the ups and downs of the neurodivergent writing process.  \n\n

SUMMARY:Literary Translation and AI
DESCRIPTION:Globally\, publishing houses have begun to explore AI for literary translation. This development has exposed what Jitka Zehnalová & Helena Kubátová (“The Profession of Literary Translator in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”\, 2026) call the “constant tension between a sense of purpose\, systemic vulnerability\, and everyday negotiation” in the profession. The tension is illustrated by a UK survey (Society of Authors 2024): over 30% of book translators reported losing work to generative AI. \nA similar proportion had used generative AI in their translation process\, sometimes in response to a publisher’s request. Our panel will take up questions that follow from this\, including: \n\n· How is the work of literary translation meaningful in the age of AI?\n· In what ways does human translation differ from machine translation?\n· Is co-translation with AI desirable\, and under what conditions?\n· What is gained\, and what is lost?\n\nThe panel will feature speakers Judith Bishop (La Trobe Uni\, moderator)\, Ward Peeters (Linguistics\, Monash Uni)\, Brigid Maher (Italian Studies\, La Trobe Uni)\, and Adam Zulawnik (Korean Studies\, University of Melbourne) to lead us through these pressing questions.

SUMMARY:Radio Laria Poetry and Puppetry with Liza Dezfouli and Lulu Lala
DESCRIPTION:This September\, Radio Laria brings you poetry and puppetry with Liza Dezfouli and Lulu Lala. Liza is a comedian\, playwright and actor who writes poetry for the best of reasons… enjoyment! Lulu is a hard rubbish puppeteer (self-taught/never trained in Prague) who alongside Eddy Burger will be performing her creepy\, offbeat shadow puppet creation. We will also have ten open mic spots where you can share in front of the magical\, shining bookshelves at Library Portal (opposite no. 11 Hawthorn Rd\, Northcote). Tickets are $10 (full)\, $5 (concession) or you can choose a generous ticket if you would like to help us support the poets and our venue Library Portal.\nhttps://events.humanitix.com/radio-laria-poetry-and…\nDoors open 7pm and the live poetry kicks off at 7:30.\nEveryone is welcome to share on the open mic\, there’s a five-minute limit\, sign up on the night and arriving early is recommended for sign up. The audience is very supportive\, and we welcome new readers. Men are welcome to share on the open mic\, but please be mindful that this is a night to promote women and women-identifying poets\, so we ask that you behave respectfully. If you have another form of art\, writing or storytelling that could be shared in five minutes\, then we’d love to hear it!\nLibrary Portal is a grassroots community centre run by volunteers for passionate readers and art groups. You can help yourselves to free tea\, but there is no licensed bar. We are allowed to BYO drink/food as long as we are mindful that it is not a party space. This space is also right next to an apartment block\, so we need to please leave quietly at the end of the night.\nLocation: Library Portal is opposite no. 11 Hawthorn Road at the back of a large\, brick orthodox church. It is easiest to find from Hawthorn Road rather than approaching the church from the front. If you approach from opposite no. 11\, there is a gateway in the fence (which is a little hard to see in the dark until you are right opposite no. 11). Once you have entered this fence gap\, you will walk up a driveway with apartments on your left and then cross a green lawn. You will then see some hills host washing lines to your right and the doorway to Library Portal is to the left of those up a ramp.\nAccessibility: Front entrance and performance space are wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Priceless Advice
DESCRIPTION:Advice is often dished out when it’s simply not asked for. In fact\, advice that charades as being in your “best interest”\, often turns out to be\, frankly\, bad advice. Witness seven writers let loose about the times they’ve received bogus advice\, and how it’s sometimes been the inspiration to succeed\, just out of spite.
