SUMMARY:Who Gets to Define Australian Culture?
DESCRIPTION:As political debate over the idea of a ‘monocultural Australia’ escalates\, questions of immigration and multiculturalism have once again become defining issues in public life. SUMMARY:Eye of the Needle by Christopher Raja
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to have Raeden Richardson host the launch of Christopher Raja’s novel\, Eye of the Needle.\n\nIn 1882 a young Afghan named Kadir lands in Port Augusta. He has arrived with six camels to make his fortune\, and so becomes the transport for a scientific expedition into the red centre. More than a century later a young man named Kris comes of age in the Melbourne suburbs\, having emigrated from India with his family when he was just a boy. After the trauma of his father’s mysterious death\, Kris gravitates to St Kilda in search of a bigger world.\n\nFate will lead Kris to drugs and sex and love. He will learn what it truly takes to write a novel about the visionary life: the tale of a cameleer who comes across the seas from Asia and is drawn into the dazzling heart of the continent\, where all is revealed – the ancient peoples\, power and possession\, lies and lust\, faith\, death\, and what really matters.\n\nFree\, but bookings are essential.

SUMMARY:Chaotic Musings: Poetry Social Club
DESCRIPTION:A welcoming and community-driven poetry open mic for everyone. \n\n\n\n\n\nVibe Union is an inclusive\, artistic collective welcoming diverse people of all experiences and backgrounds. We aim\, at every one of our events and in our online presence\, to create a safe space for all. \nWe welcome all who attend our events to provide feedback and direction on how we present these spaces in the name of making all feel welcome and heard. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the few short years that Vibe Union has existed\, we’ve explored many diverse ideas and been many things. But the one constant has been our focus on providing a platform for local Melbourne artists. \nFrom poetry nights to open mic live streams\, video series\, and a podcast\, we can’t exactly sit still. It doesn’t matter what we’re doing\, just that we’re creating and helping others create. \nThese days\, Vibe Union is hosting events for incredible\, like minded artists around Melbourne. \nOpen mic stages are the birthplace of many a collective or group. Unknowingly at the time\, the seeds of our humble community started in Brunswick at Bar Oussou. Over the course of a few months\, friendships formed and plans were made for collaboration. \nOver one weekend\, producers\, vocalists\, and rappers united to create whatever came organically. And quickly we had multiple songs complete and the starts of many others. \nEverything was looking poised for take off\, before lockdowns hit. \nFunnily enough\, this is what really kicked us into gear. We now had a lot of time on our hands\, and some savvy tech heads to lead the way through digital collaboration. \nLive events when we could\, live streams when we couldn’t. A podcast was recorded over Discord and new songs were created remotely. \nWe threw ourselves into whatever we could and welcomed anyone who wanted to contribute. \nAbove all else\, we had a sense of community we all desperately needed during a scary and lonely time to be living. \nAnd since then\, our group has shifted in size\, projects have come and gone\, but we keep putting on events for Melbourne. \nHigher production value projects; new exciting venues; but always locally focused. We’ve known after a few years of Vibe Union that helping artists find their feet is our passion. And above all else\, this is a welcoming\, supportive\, and inclusive space for everyone.

SUMMARY:History Council of Victoria Annual Lecture 2026: Direct Action\, Protest and Democracy\, Prof Sean Scalmer
DESCRIPTION:Across the globe\, many polities are currently marked by the eruption of ‘direct action’ campaigns: for environmental protection; for peace; and  against racial\, gender\, and class inequality. People march\, demonstrate\, disrupt\, occupy\, and boycott. They typically justify these actions as a legitimate response to the failures of political authorities. They also present their actions as an authentic form of ‘direct’ or ‘participatory’ democracy. Political elites sometimes tolerate these campaigns and selectively incorporate their demands. Increasingly\, however\, they seek to restrict the scope for ‘direct action’\, and to portray ‘direct action’ as a threat to legitimate order\, and as a violent assertion of minority interests. \n\nConflicts around ‘direct action’ and ‘democracy’ have a long history\, seldom referenced in contemporary political argument. In this lecture\, I trace that history\, from the 1890s until the present. This helps to establish that the tension between insurgent protest and formal authority is not new. It also establishes that the prevailing meanings of ‘direct action’ and ‘democracy’ have changed over time\, as each has shaped the other. An historical perspective also suggests a practical conclusion: attempts to limit and restrict protest threaten the vitality of democracy\, along with its capacity for renewal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSean Scalmer is a Professor of History at the University of Melbourne\, and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. \nHe is the author of seven books\, including\, most recently\, A Fair Day’s Work: The Quest to Win Back Time (2025). He is also the co-editor of six books on social movements\, labour history\, and democracy. \nSean’s research for this lecture draws partly upon prize-winning studies of direct action and democracy\, Gandhi in the West (2011) and On the Stump (2017). It also draws upon current research supported by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Annual Lecture\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe History Council of Victoria’s Annual Lecture is our most prestigious event\, featuring a noted scholar on a topic of contemporary significance\, offering insight and provocation from history and historiography. \nThe Annual Lecture is also the occasion for presenting our major awards. \nSince 2024\, the Annual Lecture has been held at the State Library of Victoria. Previous lectures were delivered online.

SUMMARY:Between the Lines: Storytelling Salon
DESCRIPTION:There’s a kind of magic that only happens after dark. \nBetween the Lines is a monthly gathering of storytellers and story-listeners held in at the Chestnut Tree Bookshop\, West Footscray. It’s warm. It’s strange. It’s real. And it’s open to anyone willing to speak from the heart—or simply sit in the dark and listen. \nEach month we explore a different theme—something to stir your memory\, quicken your pulse\, or crack you open just a little. These stories aren’t read from a page. They’re lived\, spoken\, and shared in real time. \nNo props. No scripts. Just you and the room. \nWANT TO SHARE A STORY? SIGN UP HERE
