SUMMARY:No One’s Looking by Brooke Davis
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to host the launch of Brooke Davis’s new novel\, No One’s Looking.\n\nWhen Susan first meets her sister\, Vicki\, she puts a hand on the new baby’s tiny forearm\, and Vicki stops screaming. Just like that. If only it were so easy forty-five years later. Susan has always been the quiet\, nice sister\, but her husband’s sudden demand for an open marriage – and a rather large purple object she’d forgotten about – provokes a slow-dawning epiphany: being the ‘good’ girl doesn’t always mean it’s good for you.\n\nJust down the road\, Vicki listens at the door of her seventeen-year-old daughter’s room – her only child – and is shocked at what she hears. Her old urge to scream builds. As she listens to a true crime podcast and doom scrolls the news headlines\, she can feel a terror building in her bones. She can’t help believing something very bad is going to happen. It’s January in suburban Australia – stinking hot\, the sound of tennis and cricket on telly\, the threat of bushfires in the air. Vicki is right\, something is unravelling. Rage\, desire\, fear\, wonder (and the occasional nipple) are unleashed. In the aftermath\, will Susan and Vicki ever find out what’s possible when no one’s looking?\n\nNo One’s Looking is an original\, wise and life-affirming novel that shows it is never too late to change who people expect you to be.\n\nFree\, but bookings are essential.

SUMMARY:For Future Reference: Jennifer Robinson on Courage
DESCRIPTION:What does courage mean in an increasingly complex and uncertain world?   \nAt State Library Victoria’s 2026 For Future Reference lecture\, Jennifer Robinson\, one of the most respected human rights lawyers and advocates of our time\, will consider this question through the lens of her extraordinary career.  \nAs the recipient of the 2026 Sydney Peace Prize\, Jennifer’s landmark work includes securing the release of Julian Assange\, achieving political asylum for West Papuan leader Benny Wenda\, representing Amber Heard in Johnny Depp’s unsuccessful defamation claim\, and taking climate change to the International Court of Justice.  \nIn this special lecture\, Jennifer will reflect on the nature of courage – what it looks and feels like for herself and the clients she represents\, as well as what courage means for cultural institutions that care for and preserve collections for future generations.   \nThe barrister\, author and keynote speaker will also explore whether the notion of courage has taken on new meaning in an era increasingly beset by conflict and crisis.  \nEndowed by the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust\, this lecture follows the 2026 Sundance Film Festival premiere and subsequent Melbourne International Film Festival screenings of Silenced\, a new documentary featuring Jennifer that exposes gender-based violence and the ways defamation laws have been weaponised to silence survivors.   \nThere will be an opportunity to view rare books acquired through the Library’s Women Writers Fund initiative prior to the event.  \nThis event will be livestreamed. Auslan interpretation is available upon request.   \nDoors will open from 6.30pm. Drinks will be available to purchase on the night.  \nCopies of Jennifer’s book\, How Many More Women?\, will be available to purchase from Readings booksellers at the event.  \nBook your tickets now.  \n  \nAbout Jennifer Robinson \nJennifer Robinson is one of the world’s leading human rights lawyers and advocates. A barrister at Doughty Street Chambers in London\, she has acted in key international law\, human rights and media freedom cases in domestic and international courts. Her diverse and groundbreaking work includes: defending WikiLeaks and Julian Assange and securing his release; acting for Amber Heard in relation to Johnny Depp’s unsuccessful defamation claim in the UK; achieving political asylum for West Papuan leader Benny Wenda; and taking climate change to the world’s highest court\, the International Court of Justice. Beyond the courts\, Jennifer is an author (How Many More Women with Dr Keio Yoshida)\, a sought-after keynote speaker\, and executive producer and consultant for television and film.   \n  \nAbout the For Future Reference lecture series \nEndowed by the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust\, For Future Reference is an annual lecture series that shines a light on women’s influence on society via the mediums of literature\, storytelling and authorship\, both historically and into the future\, with a focus on the future archives to be held in the State Collection.  \nThis series is supported by the Library’s Women Writers Fund\, which seeks to redress the historical gender imbalance in the State Collection by acquiring works by under-represented women writers\, artists and thinkers.

What began as a single weekend of events has grown into a rich\, year-round program that engages our community in every season. \nEach year\, the Queenscliffe Literary Festival delivers: \n\nA Schools Program that reaches over 500 young people across every childcare\, kindergarten and primary school in the Borough of Queenscliffe\, connecting kids with authors and poets who bring stories to life\nPop-up events that take literature out into the community throughout the year\nThe Penned Micro-Fiction Writing Competition\, nurturing short-form storytelling from all across the country\nA Program Launch that kicks off in style and engages local businesses\, organisations\, and partners\nA full two-weekend festival in October\, featuring award-winning Australian authors\, thinkers and performers in sessions that spark conversation and delight audiences of all ages\n\nWe believe that great literature shouldn’t be reserved for big cities. Stories have the power to build empathy\, spark curiosity\, and bring a community together\, and that’s exactly what we do\, in one of Victoria’s most beloved coastal towns. In Queenscliffe\, we are proud to be one of the municipality’s premier cultural events. \nWe are a volunteer-run\, not-for-profit festival\, and every year we grow\, reaching more readers\, students\, and community members\, to share more stories and ideas that\, in an increasingly disconnected and fragile world\, need to be told.

SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH: The Everywhere Train by Deborah Frenkel and Danny Snell
DESCRIPTION:The Little Bookroom is excited to be launching the new picture book from Deborah Frenkel and Danny Snell\, The Everywhere Train! \n  \nJoin the creators of the delightfully popular The Truck Cat as they share behind the scenes of their books! \n  \nYou can pre-order HERE \n  \nAbout the Book: \nOn Fridays\, Scout goes riding on the train with Pop. They look at the world ribboning past\, hello-goodbye-hello-goodbye … \nWhen Pop moves into an aged-care facility\, it seems their train-riding tradition is over\, but Scout and Pop make a plan …They build a station by his bed\, make the tickets and board a train that can take them anywhere – to yesterday and tomorrow\, to here and there\, and all the everywheres in between. \nFrom the beloved creators of The Truck Cat comes a story about trains and traditions\, children and their grandparents\, and the everlasting power of memory and imagination.  \n  \nAbout the creators: \nDeborah Frenkel is a writer of books\, billboards\, and the words on the back of cereal boxes\, which to date is probably her most widely read work (and certainly the most crunchy). Her picture books include the award-winning Naturopolis (2022) and The Sydney Harbour Fairy (2023). She’s based on Bunurong land\, in Melbourne’s Inner West\, but spends most of the time squinting at horizons in her imagination. \nAs a child Danny Snell was a reluctant reader\, so it was pictures rather than words that drew him to the wonder of books. Danny went on to study graphic design and illustration at the University of South Australia and he now works as a picture book illustrator and author. His books have won a number of awards including the CBCA Eve Pownall Award\, the Environment Award for Children’s Literature\, and the Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Award. Danny lives in Adelaide with his partner\, his two daughters and a sleepy old cat. And yes\, he loves to read.
