SUMMARY:The Causes and Consequences of Victoria’s Mass Imprisonment Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Flick Chafer-Smith and Meena Singh discuss the growing human\, economic and societal consequences of Victoria’s soaring incarceration rates.\nVictoria is in the grip of a mass imprisonment crisis. As the state’s prison population grows\, recent efforts to address crime have focused on tougher consequences. Can punishment alone deliver safer communities? And what does it mean for people caught in the criminal justice system and for those working on its frontline? \nNgarrindjeri artist Flick Chafer-Smith draws on her personal experience of incarceration and her work with The Torch\, which provides cultural and arts industry support to First Nations people in\, or recently released\, from Victorian prisons. Meena Singh is Professor of Practice at Monash Law and the former Victorian Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People. \nTogether\, they will examine Victoria’s current approaches to crime and punishment and ask: Are they actually making our communities safer? Hosted by Maggie Munn\, First Nations Justice Director of Human Rights Law Centre. \n  \nPresented in partnership with Human Rights Law Centre

SUMMARY:Back to Back Barries: The Victorian State Election
DESCRIPTION:Join Barrie Cassidy and Tony Barry for a live recording of the Guardian’s popular podcast Back to Back Barries days before the final votes are cast.\nVictoria’s Labor Government is seeking a fourth term. The Coalition wants to end 12 years in opposition. And One Nation’s resurgence in the polls continues.  \nIn 2025\, political commentators Barrie Cassidy and Tony Barry took to The Wheeler Centre stage to unpack the federal election in front of a sold-out audience. Now\, they return with their sights set firmly on Victoria.  \nAs the state enters the final days of the election campaign\, the Barries will dissect the contest\, explore the issues shaping the race and consider what the result might mean for Victoria over the next four years – and for the broader national political landscape.  \nPresented in partnership with the Guardian and RMIT University

SUMMARY:Shut Up and Write!
DESCRIPTION:Writing is often treated as something you do alone. The Wheeler Centre offers an alternative: write alongside others\, without comparison or competition. \nOver the years\, the phrase ‘shut up and write’ has travelled widely. What began as a simple\, practical mantra has become a global movement embraced by writers seeking focus\, accountability and a sense of shared purpose. At its heart is a straightforward idea: set aside distractions\, gather in a welcoming space and dedicate time to the page.  \nShut Up and Write! sessions at The Wheeler Centre are open to writers of all kinds – from novelists and poets to academics\, journalists and anyone keen to get words on the page. No critiquing and no pressure to share your work. Instead\, the emphasis is on carving out protected time to write within a supportive community.  \nWhether you’re starting something new or returning to a long-awaited draft\, these sessions offer structure\, camaraderie and the quiet motivation that comes from writing together.  \nHosted by Xanthea O’Connor. \n  \nPresented in partnership with Writers Victoria

SUMMARY:Between the Lines: Storytelling Salon
DESCRIPTION:There’s a kind of magic that only happens after dark. \nBetween the Lines is a monthly gathering of storytellers and story-listeners held in at the Chestnut Tree Bookshop\, West Footscray. It’s warm. It’s strange. It’s real. And it’s open to anyone willing to speak from the heart—or simply sit in the dark and listen. \nEach month we explore a different theme—something to stir your memory\, quicken your pulse\, or crack you open just a little. These stories aren’t read from a page. They’re lived\, spoken\, and shared in real time. \nNo props. No scripts. Just you and the room. \nWANT TO SHARE A STORY? SIGN UP HERE
