Furphy Writing Prize

The Furphy Literary Award encourages Australian writers everywhere to roll up their sleeves and prepare a short story to enter in this year’s competition, responding to the perennial theme Australian life in all its diversity.

The Furphy Literary Award is named in honour of Australian writer Joseph Furphy, who wrote the classic Such is Life in 1903 under the pen name Tom Collins. Theme: Australian life in all its diversity

We are looking for short stories of up to 5,000 words.

Maximum Length: 5,000 wordsEntry Deadline: 30 April, 2025 First Prize: $15,000, a La Trobe University Residency and publication in The Furphy Anthology 2025 Second Prize: $3,000 plus publication in The Furphy Anthology 2025 Third Prize: $2,000 plus publication in The Furphy Anthology 2025

An additional 13 shortlisted stories are published in the annual Anthology. The highly credentialled FLA judging panel consists of Anson Cameron, Margaret Hickey, Stephanie Holt, John Kerr, Thornton McCamish and John Harms.
