History Council of Victoria

Event Date: 14 September 2021
Author / Presenters: Alexis Bergantz, Yves Rees

Alexis Bergantz in conversation with Yves Rees

7pm, 14 September 2021

We think of colonial Australia as having a British culture, but the truth is much more cosmopolitan. Yves Rees will talk to Alexis Bergantz about his debut monograph French Connection, which explores how the culture of Frenchness influenced a young Australia eager to prove itself to the world. Join us to discover how Frenchness showed up in Australia, what Frenchness actually entails, and what prompted Bergantz - a French migrant himself - to write this groundbreaking and elegant book.

Alexis Bergantz is a Lecturer in Global and Language Studies at RMIT University, researching the French Pacific, New Caledonia and Franco-Australian history.

Yves Rees is a Lecturer in History at La Trobe University, HCV Board Member and co-host of Archive Fever podcast.

This event will be held via Zoom.

Book + Author: The HCV Book Club brings you authors in conversation, exploring their work alongside a group of HCV Friends.
