Brunswick Bound

Further to our series of crime authors in conversation at Brunswick Bound Upstairs, novelist Ben Hobson will be in conversation with Sarah Bailey (Where The Dead Go) about Snake Island , his second novel following his critically acclaimed debut To Become a Whale.

In Snake Island Ben tackles the literary crime genre. Set in a starkly beautiful Australian setting that draws on Ben's own recollections of growing up in regional Victoria in the 1990s, their conversation will explore the idea of morality and meaning in a relativistic culture, what it means to be good, and how to write a black comedy thrill-ride with deeper themes.

Ben Hobson Ben Hobson lives in Brisbane and currently teaches English and Music at Bribie Island State High School. In 2014 his novella, If The Saddle Breaks My Spine, was shortlisted for the Viva La Novella prize, run by Seizureonline. To Become a Whale, his first novel, was published in 2017.

Sarah Bailey is a Melbourne-based writer with a background in advertising and communications. She has two young children and is currently the Managing Partner of advertising agency VMLY&R in Melbourne. Her first novel, the bestselling The Dark Lake, won the Ned Kelly and Davitt Awards for a debut and she has since published two other novels, Into the Night and Where The Dead Go in her Detective Gemma Woodstock series.
