Dome at dusk: Australia’s golden age of cycling

State Library Victoria

Event Date: 15 February 2018
Author / Presenters: State Library Victoria

Visit the Changing face of Victoria exhibition to uncover the stories of the endurance cyclists at the centre of Australia’s 1930s cycling craze, including Malvern Star-sponsored Hubert Opperman, whose celebrity once rivalled that of cricketer Don Bradman and racehorse Phar Lap!.

Post-World War I Australians were gripped by the endurance cycling craze at a time when questions about colonialism, masculinity and modernity were emerging in the public consciousness.
