Building an Essay Collection

Writers Victoria

Event Date: 15 July 2023 10:00 AM
Author / Presenters: [email protected]

Essay collections are constructed from individual essays, but it's necessary to consider the ways in which separate pieces speak to one another. This workshop will explore different aspects of shaping essay collections, considering ways to build coherence through theme and voice, posing central inquiries or working throughlines into the manuscript and deciding the structure and order of pieces. The workshop will also dip into aspects of crafting individual essays using hybrid forms.

You can find details of how Covid-19 restrictions will affect the workshop here: https://writersvictoria.org.au/about-us/covid-19-information/. You are encouraged to wear a mask in the workshop space. The Wheeler Centre’s policy is that close contacts should not attend the building. If you are a close contact of somebody with Covid-19, or have Covid-19 symptoms yourself, please do not attend[email protected] to arrange a refund in this situation.

You will learn:

• About the types of essay, the modern essay, and hybrid essays
• Different strategies for creating coherence and bringing individual essays together into a collection
• Techniques for working with individual and collective memory
• Approaches to editing
• Strategies for research and citation
