Grief in Poetry

Writers Victoria

Event Date: 3 June 2023 10:00 AM
Author / Presenters: [email protected]

What does it mean to grieve through poetry? What can poetry and language offer us in times of loss and deep personal anguish? In this course we will read a diverse selection of poems on loss and discuss the unique way in which each poem celebrates or mourns what’s been lost. We will produce our own “grief poems” by imitating the style and form of the poetry we will be reading.
This seminar will take place online. Detailed instructions for participation will be provided. You Will Learn:

  • Why poetry matters especially in times of loss
  • Skills for close-reading poetry
  • Different ways in which poets approach grief in their poems
  • Be open to different ways of interpreting a single poem
  • How to create your own poems about grief through imitations
