Optimistic and radical, Australia’s political culture was especially influential among fellow Progressive reformers in the new world democracy of the United States of America.. But this ideal of political equality was also one of racial exclusion. Marilyn Lake talks with Jock Serong about the paradox at the very heart of settler colonialism. Why has it taken so long for us to recognise and challenge the ways in which progressive politics incorporated the racism of evolutionary thnking that divided the world into “backward” and “advanced”?
