De re Anatomica by Matteo Colombo
Melbourne Rare Book Week
The Cowlishaw Collection, purchased in 1943 from the estate of physician and bibliophile, Dr Leslie Cowlishaw, illustrates the history of medicine and shows how it developed from witchcraft into a science. While several anatomists made significant contributions to the field in the 16th century, history has tended to laud Vesalius and his De Fabrica over his one-time pupil Matteo Colombo, whose De re Anatomica, also based on anatomical observations and human dissection, was an important and successful publication in its day.
