Do Australia’s vast landscapes and the continent’s ancient history make it particularly hard for a nation of immigrants to understand the country, or feel at home here? Belinda Probert, who migrated from England over 40 years ago, talks to Tom Griffiths about her own attempts to understand (or even like) the landscapes she has seen, and the people who have shaped them. In this conversation they will discuss whether gardening can help, whether we need to know more about the continent’s natural history, whether particular writers can help us to take ‘imaginative possession’, and whether this is even possible.
