Since the gay liberation movement of the 70s, there’s been an explosion of diverse LGBTIQA+ voices across our cultural landscape. Jess Ho (Raised by Wolves: A Memoir with Bite), Graham Willett (Living Out Loud) and Sam Elkin (Detachable Penis: A Queer Legal Saga) discuss LGBTIQA+ memoir, narrative-nonfiction and collective histories of struggle against oppression. Chaired by Kate Hall.
Writer, journalist and critic Jess Ho was Time Out Melbourne's food-and-drink editor, has been published in dozens of magazines and periodicals and contributed to many Melbourne restaurant guides and cookbooks. They've made podcasts for 7am and BBC, and now SBS with Bad Taste. Raised by Wolves is their first book.
Graham Willett is an historian who has researched and written on Australian queer history for over 40 years. He is the author of Living Out Loud, a history of the gay and lesbian movement (Allen&Unwin, 2000) and was editor and main author in Secret Histories of Queer Melbourne (ALGA, 2011).
Sam Elkin is a writer, radiomaker, and co-editor of Nothing to Hide: Voices of TGD Australia. He hosts the 3RRR show Queer View Mirror and ABC History Listen’s Crossing Time: Australia's Transgender History. His debut book Detachable Penis: A Queer Legal Saga will be released by Upswell in May 2024.
Kate Hall (she/her) lives, surfs and writes on unceded Wadawurrung country. She is the Creative Director of Q-Lit: Queer Victorian Festival of Words, and the award-winning author of From Darkness (Duet Books, New York, 2020), a sapphic romance set in the Otways and the classical underworld.
