From Friday 6 to Sunday 8 September, the Western Port Writes Literary Festival is bringing readers and writers together to celebrate stories from the Mornington Peninsula and beyond.

It will be a weekend of engaging author conversations, writerly panels, and community events for all ages and reading interests, with a lineup of fabulous writers and presenters. Festival events are taking place in Bittern, Balnarring and Somers.

Friday 6 September

  • Publishing Day for Emerging Writers at Bittern Hall (10.15am -2pm) The day includes a workshop and two panels with industry experts, plus networking over lunch
  • Friday Night Community Storytime at Balnarring Hall (6.30pm-9.30pm) A night of words and music with live readings of Letters to Western Port by locals and local legends; music from Owen Thomas and the Big Hats; food and cocktail vans.

Saturday 7 September

  • A day of words at Coolart Wetlands and Homestead, Somers (9am- 4.30pm) The festival opening and Welcome to Country kicks off a day of author talks and writer panels covering First Nations innovations, environment, lifestyle and wellbeing topics; and a Children’s Program.
  • Festival Dinner at Somers Yacht Club (6.30pm-10pm) Crime Night: You Couldn’t Make This Up. Three-course dinner and a panel talk with Jon Faine, Vikki Petraitis and Christian White.

Sunday 8 September at Somers Yacht Club (10am-4.30pm)

  • Diving into Writing. Panels and author conversations on climate fiction, complex female characters, the importance of place and the writing life.
  • Festival Close - Wine and Words. Local winemakers discuss sustainability in a changing environment. Tastings included.
