Curry Punk & Jelly Brain – Exploring the Weird World of Fungi

Whitehorse Manningham Libraries

Event Date: 4 March 2022
Author / Presenters: Alison Pouliot

It seems we are in something of a ‘mushroom moment’. Fungi and their subterranean alliances are capturing imaginations and foragers are rediscovering the joys of wild-foraged food.
Fungi not only help plants access water and nutrients, but also increase their resistance to drought and disease. They build architecture in soils, aerating them and allowing water to gently percolate to deeper horizons. While often maligned by gardeners, most fungi are friends, not foes.
Ecologist, photographer and author Alison Pouliot has straddled both hemispheres for over two decades. This enables her to experience two autumns each year and a double dose of fungi. In this illustrated and interactive seminar Alison will explore the fascinating lives of these misunderstood organisms and will include some excerpts from her book The Allure of Fungi in which she interacted with fungi and their followers in the forests of a dozen countries.
Signed copies of Alison’s books, The Allure of Fungi and Wild Mushrooming will be available for purchase.
