Renowned Melbourne barrister, Guy Gilbert, in association with Surf Coast Rural Australians for Refugees will discuss his involvement with refugee rights and the law.
In association with Surf Coast Rural Australians, renowned Melbourne barrister Guy Gilbert, will discuss his involvement with immigration and refugee law.
In 1985, he and his wife worked in a refugee camp in Sudan and from 1989-91 co-ordinated disaster response programs in the horn of Africa, with refugees and the internally displaced. From 1993-97 he was a part-time member of the Refugee Review Tribunal. He has been co-author of Refugee Law chapter of the Lawyers Practice Manual and advocacy trainer on behalf of the Victorian Bar in the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and for the Federal Court in Nauru.
He is presently the Chair of the Victorian Bar's Migration Law Bar Association and the chair of the International Commission of Jurists (Victoria) and co-chair of the Sudd Foundation, an NGO which is designed to assist youth of South Sudanese background and single mothers who are struggling to adapt to Australian society. He is a trustee of Wellwishers, an NGO which raises money for the construction of hand-dug water wells and related hygiene education in Ethiopia.
