John Safran and Sally Warhaft in conversation: Depends What You Mean By Extremist and the rise of political radicalism
Stonnington Libraries
Gonzo journalist John Safran and broadcaster Sally Warhaft discuss John’s second book, Depends What You Mean By Extremist: Going Rogue with Australian Deplorables and the rise of political radicalism in Australia and around the world.
John Safran is an award-winning documentary maker, satirist and author, known for his provocative and humorous takes on religion, politics, media and cultural issues. His first book, Murder In Mississippi was released in 2014 and is the true story of how John met a white supremacist and befriended his black killer. In his latest book, Depends What You Mean by Extremist, John attends a far-right rally in Melbourne and is led into a mad world of misfits, white nationalists, ISIS supporters and anarchists. John first hit TV screens in 1997 on Race Around the World. Both John Safran’s Music Jamboree and John Safran vs. God won Australian Film Industry awards for best comedy series and most original concept, and were also nominated for Logie awards. Other shows include John Safran’s Race Relations and Speaking in Tongues. He co-hosted Sunday Night Safran, a radio talk show on Triple J with cranky but beloved Catholic priest, Father Bob Maguire, for ten years.
Sally Warhaft is a regular commentator on ABC radio and the host of the Wheeler Centre’s live journalism series, The Fifth Estate. She is a former editor of the Monthly magazine and the author of the bestselling book Well May We Say: The Speeches that Made Australia.
