Spanner in the works – the extraordinary life of Alice Anderson and Australia's only all-girl garage
Boroondara Library Service
A spanner in the works is the extraordinary story of Alice Anderson and her all-female garage on the corner of Cotham Road and Charles Street in Kew, which was in business in 1919,100 years ago.
Alice was the first woman to own and manage a garage in Australia, employing female mechanics, drivers and a chauffeur service. Author Loretta Smith began her journey to uncover Alice’s life when one of her aged-care clients mentioned her mother worked as a driver and mechanic for Alice Anderson.
