World Poetry Day 2024

Geelong Regional Library

Event Date: 21 March 2024 06:00 PM to 21 March 2024 08:00 PM
Author / Presenters: David McCooey
Event Organiser: Geelong Regional Libraries
Ticket Price: $10 – $20

Featuring local poets Brendan Ryan, Lyn Chatham, Anthony Lynch, Julie Maclean and Jo Langdon, as well as our internationally-based Virtual Writer in Residence, Alice Eaves.

World Poetry Day was declared by UNESCO in 1999. The purpose of the day is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world and, as the UNESCO session declaring the day says, to ‘give fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and international poetry movements.’

The Geelong Regional Library Corporation has celebrated World Poetry Day on 21 March since 2011.

Come along to hear readings by local poets Brendan Ryan, Lyn Chatham, Anthony Lynch, Julie Maclean and Jo Langdon, as well as our internationally-based Virtual Writer in Residence, Alice Eaves, who will be joining us online from her home in Edinburgh.

The evening will also include a mid-way break for refreshments, and the announcement of the Local Word Writing Prize winner. The poets' books will be available for purchase on the night.

David McCooey will introduce the poets. David is a prize-winning, poet, critic, and editor. His latest collection of poetry is The Book of Falling (Upswell, 2023). David lives in Geelong and is Professor of Writing and Literature at Deakin University.

Tickets $20 including refreshments, $10 for Geelong Regional Library Corporation Members.
