Catastrophes – an occasional reading series
Brunswick Bound
Sometimes life feels like a vase that’s shattered, but hasn’t yet fallen.
Come to the first of our Catastrophes readings, where local writers read work that speaks to the epic and lyric calamities of our times.
With readings by Amy Brown, Bonny Cassidy, Alex Creece, and Joan Fleming.
Amy Brown is a poet, novelist and teacher. In 2012 she completed a PhD in creative writing at the University of Melbourne. She is the author of The Propaganda Poster Girl (VUP, 2008), which was shortlisted at the 2009 New Zealand Book Awards, and The Odour of Sanctity (VUP, 2013), a contemporary epic poem, and Neon Daze (VUP, 2020), a verse journal of the first four months of motherhood that upends genre and notions of linear time, and searches restlessly for a way to map the breakages, shearings, and devastations of new parenthood.
Bonny Cassidy is a poet, essayist and critic, whose first collection, Certain Fathoms, was shortlisted for the 2012 Western Australian Premier’s Poetry Award. Her most recent collection, Chatelaine, was shortlisted for the 2018 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Poetry and the 2018 Queensland Literary Award for Poetry. Final Theory is rich with desolate imagery that invokes the real threat of catastrophe in almost cinematic terms, both summoning and refuting an easy 'theory of everything'.
Alex Creece is writer, poet, student and average kook living on Wadawurrung land (Geelong, Victoria). Alex is the Production Editor at Cordite Poetry Review, and was awarded a 2019 Write-ability Fellowship with Writers Victoria. Her work can be found on SBS Online, Scum Mag, Cordite, Junkee and others. Alex is passionate about neurodiversity in the arts, particularly given its intersections with other forms of identity and social inequity.
Joan Fleming is the author of two collections of poetry, The Same as Yes and Failed Love Poems, both from Victoria University Press, and the pamphlets Two Dreams in Which Things Are Taken (Duets) and Some People’s Favourites (Desperate Literature). Recent nonfiction has been published in Meanjin, Westerley, and The Pantograph Punch. She holds a PhD in ethnopoetics from Monash University, and a dystopian verse novel exploring ritual and the limits of love in the ruins of ecological collapse is forthcoming with Cordite Books.
