The luminous insights of Stars Like Salt: Poems by Cathy Altmann emerge from the isolations of long COVID. The sweep of stars lifts our gaze, while salt reminds us of what is close to hand – tears, waves and the prospect of healing.
Join in this special poetry event to hear Cathy read – a must for all of us listening, reading and thinking about the insights that poetry can bring.
And Open Mic of course – if you would like to read, contact us at [email protected] and shine up your best 3 mins of poetry.
Cathy Altmann
Cathy Altmann’s first collection, Circumnavigation (Poetica Christi Press, 2014), won the FAW Anne Elder Award. Her second collection, things we know without naming (Poetica Christi Press), was published in 2018.
Cathy’s poetry has appeared in journals, anthologies, websites and on Melbourne’s trains as part of the Moving Galleries project. She holds a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Melbourne and currently teaches English and Latin.
If in poems we seek to be reminded of the world—those ways in which its miraculously detailed presence matters to us—then these poems do that for their fortunate readers. Cathy Altmann’s mastery of voice, and of the tumblingly fluid potential of the short free-verse line bring to us a sumptuous poetry in the simplest language. From the frightening masterpiece, ‘Boat’ to the sensuous dazzle of ‘Lascia Ch’io Piango’, these poems of spider webs, sand grains, tidelines, small fish by a pier, trees that sing are truly, in her sure hands, ‘ziplines of joy’.
