Residencia Permanente/Permanent Residency Poetry Book Launch
A Voz Limpia
An international student arrives in Melbourne, Australia, from Queretaro, Mexico. During the first months, he starts uncovering the country’s post-colonial reality: classism, poverty and racism appear almost everywhere, just
like in Mexico. In this new reality, friendships also emerge, shining bright, sharing hardships and helping one another through times of silence, grief and joy. And then the pandemic changes it all.
In his debut poetry collection, award-winning author Alejandro del Castillo takes the readers on an introspective journey through pre-COVID Melbourne, the longest lockdown in the world, and our new shared reality.
Written in Spanish and English, Permanent Residency depicts what it’s like to inhabit two worlds at the same time and what it takes to try to reconcile them. Del Castillo’s debut collection is also a love letter to Melbourne and the immigration stories that, although often silenced, hold it together.
Two books will be launched simultaneously at this event: Residencia Permanente (Alejandro del Castillo's original collection of poems) and Permanent Residency (an English translation of a selection of his poems).
