Do you have a curiosity or passion for writing and rhythm? Whether you’re in it for the writing or performance, discover why spoken word poetry is so powerful and popular amongst young people. In this writing workshop, renowned poet and spoken word champion Thabani Tshuma guides writers of all levels, through his creative process. This workshop will cover the following topics: 

  • Slam tips 
  • Q&A on writing and performance 
  • Authentic expression through writing
  • Page-to-stage: adapting work for performance
  • Performance basics: stage presence, breathing, memorisation

Thabani has extensive experience teaching teenagers and young adults in this craft which builds confidence, creativity and writing skills.

THABANI TSHUMA

Thabani Tshuma is a Zimbabwean writer and performance poet. His work is influenced by the myriad identity challenges of the diaspora, expatriates, and immigrants, while also addressing awareness around addiction, mental health, and generational trauma. He is the co-curator of Thin Red Lines, a 2019 Hotdesk fellowship recipient with the Wheeler Centre, featured author with Djed Press, Slamalamadingdong’s 2019 Grand Slam champion, ranked among the top 50 slam poets worldwide at IWPS 2019 and winner of the 2019 Melbourne Spoken Word Prize, People’s choice and Conveners’ choice awards. Writing is the aperture through which he views the world and experiences self in relation to others.
