Ivanhoe Reading Circle discussing My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin
Ivanhoe ReadingCircle
My Brilliant Career, first published in 1901, this Australian classic is the candid tale of the aspirations and frustrations of sixteen-year-old Sybylla Melvin, a headstrong country girl constrained by middle-class social arrangements, especially the pressure to marry.
The Ivanhoe Reading Circle, established in 1920, bring books and the community together.
Through reading we can offer you the opportunity to connect to other lives, emotions and voices across time and space. You can experience the companionship of other readers by discussing literary, political and social ideas and diverse texts you may not otherwise read.
We meet 10 times a year, including 1 guest speaker. We cover 5 fiction and 3 non-fiction books per year – by both Australian and International authors.
The meeting begins with a short presentation on the month’s book, presented by a volunteer Reading Circle member. The meeting is then opened to everyone for questions and discussion.
We may have 25-30 people attending a meeting. This means there is an opportunity for a range of engagement styles – perhaps you like to ask questions, perhaps you prefer to sit and listen.
