Dispatches from the Frontlin

La Mama Theatre

Event Date: 11 December 2021
Author / Presenters: Geraldine Cook-Dafner and Naomi Edwards

Dispatches from the Frontline is a performed reading by Geraldine Cook-Dafner of excerpts from the diary of a Victorian nurse, Sister Nan Reay, who served for four gruelling years on the “frontline” of the battlefields of WW1.

These “dispatches” celebrate this nurse’s duty, resilience, courage and tenacity; traits that are embodied daily by ‘front line’ health workers all over Australia as we combat the COVID pandemic. It has been these workers who have scaffolded our community fearlessly as they continue to risk themselves in unknown situations.  Nan Reay’s lived experiences provide great insight into how we might navigate the complexity of present times.

“Listening to what that First World War nurse went through just brought me straight back to ICU where we have struggled for the past year. The language and experiences of this nurse resonated so much with what we’ve been through”. – Audience (from previous reading of Dispatches from the Frontline)
