The Red Tree
Arts Centre Melbourne
Join us for an extraordinary journey to a world of imagination, where origami boats take you on an ocean voyage, giant fish host musical interludes and parades pass you by.
Based on the beloved book by Shaun Tan, follow the little red leaf into this spectacular new work of musical theatre for ages 7 and older.
When the dice is always loaded against you how do you move forward? This is the story of a young girl who does not want to get out of bed. An exciting world is waiting outside the four walls of her room, but will she ever be able to conquer her fears and anxieties to explore it? Discover how she finally embraces hope, realising that it’s okay to feel different.
Performed with musicians live on-stage, the breathtaking score fuses pop, classical and traditional musical theatre elements with ingenious sound design and digital recordings. All set against a stunning backdrop of projections referencing Shaun Tan's iconic illustrations.
Led by director Neil Gooding, this work has been adapted for the stage by multi-award winning writer Hilary Bell and ARIA award-winning songwriter and composer Greta Gertler Gold. Shaun Tan’s acclaimed book, The Red Tree, won the ‘Patricia Wrightson Prize’ in the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards (2002) and following its French translation, the ‘le Prix Octogones’ prize by the Centre International d’Etudes en Literature de Jeunesse (2003). His work continues to capture the imagination of readers around the world.
