Viewshed: Literary perspectives on Landscape

Castlemaine Festival

Event Date: 21 March 2017
Author / Presenters: Trace Balla, Christie Nieman, Andrew Long

Viewshed takes the form of a conversation about elements of the Australian landscape, and the ways in which they may have influenced rural Australian literature. Combining strands of folklore, fiction, art, history, nature and the personal experiences of those who inhabit or journey across country, Viewshed examines the traditions of John Muir, Nan Shepherd, Patrick Leigh Fermor, Robert MacFarlane and others who have sought an appreciation of place, and how this is expressed in our local context.
Viewshed participants are Andrew Long who enjoys a dual career in archaeology and mountain literature (Mount of Alex Bookshop), Trace Balla, a local illustrator and author (Rivertime, Rockhopping, Shine and forthcoming book The Thank You Dish – Allen & Unwin) and author, editor and playwright Christie Nieman
(As Stars Fall – Pan Macmillan).
The Mount of Alex Bookshop will be open for sales and the authors’ books will be available for signing and purchasing after the event.
