Micaela Sahhar: Find Me at the Jaffa Gate
The Wheeler Centre
Celebrate the launch of Find Me at the Jaffa Gate, a moving and genre-defying contemplation of inheritance, place, memory and chance by Micaela Sahhar, a masterful new voice in literature. Micaela Sahhar’s accomplished debut examines what is inherited by the daughter of a Nakba survivor – that which cannot be passed down in heirlooms or property, but is instead carried through stories, memories and a search for restitution. Developed with the assistance of The Wheeler Centre’s Next Chapter fellowship in 2021, Find Me at the Jaffa Gate is ‘a powerful thud of fury, beauty and resistance’ (Antony Loewenstein). Sahhar’s narrative assembles a story of Palestinian diaspora, intertwining the lived experience of exile and loss with the fierce desire to reassemble a past and to refuse the narratives imposed on Palestinian people in the present. She is joined by prominent Wiradjuri poet and academic Jeanine Leane – Sahhar’s mentor throughout her Next Chapter fellowship – and award-winning author André Dao for an evening of readings, discussion and celebration of this unique contribution to Australia’s literary landscape.
