Author / Presenters: Sophie Cunningham and Hilary McPhee

Join Fitzroy locals Sophie Cunningham and Hilary McPhee at the Brunswick Street Bookstore as they discuss the intersection of writing and life in their recently published books City of Trees and Other People's Houses.

'Our unthinking feet walk a vanishing beachscape, a porous and sandy place: the past, the future bleed.'

Sophie Cunningham is the author of five books, City of Trees, Geography, Bird, Melbourne, and Warning: The Story of Cyclone Tracy. She is a former publisher and editor, was a co-founder of the Stella Prize and is now an Adjunct Professor at RMIT University’s Non/fiction Lab. In 2019 Sophie Cunningham was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her contributions to literature.

'I was more alone than I'd ever been in my life and there was some small triumph in it.'

Hilary McPhee is a writer and editor. She founded McPhee Gribble Publishers with Diana Gribble in 197, was Chair of the Australia Council for the Arts 1994-97, and inaugural Vice-Chancellor's fellow at Melbourne University until 2004. Her books include Other People's Words, Wordlines, Memoirs of a Young Bastard: The Diaries of Tim Burstall and Other People's Houses.
