Writing Self and Other with Safdar Ahmed
Express Media
Award-winning comics artist, zine maker, educator and Refugee Art Project-founder, Dr Safdar Ahmed, joins Eloise Grills to discuss the politics of writing and drawing non-fiction. We discuss important elements of his practice, including activism, self-exposure, structures, drawing style and influences, and how these come together in his important memoir and non-fiction work. We will discuss Ahmed’s self-excoriating autobiographical projects which mine his personal experience (My Struggle with Crohns Disease, The Good Son, Drawing Dad, etc), and his recent, multi-award-winning graphic non-fiction tome, Still Alive (Twelve Panels Press, 2021) and how Ahmed uses voice, perspective, remediation and humour to explore both deeply personal and deeply political topics, while respecting the boundaries of himself and others.
