SUMMARY:Noble Fragments
DESCRIPTION:This panel discussion draws from Michael Visontay’s successful book Noble Fragments: the maverick who broke up the world’s greatest book\, tracing his personal family history as connected to the Gutenberg Bible. Expanding from the notion of a fragment\, this conversation travels from Australia into Southeast Asia towards Europe. The panel members each bring insightful perspectives showcasing how their research and artistic practice engage with the notion of fragments in history. The event will also feature a viewing of rare items from the University’s Special Collections\, including a leaf from the Gutenberg Bible.\n\nHeld in the Leigh Scott Room\, Level 1\, Baillieu Library.

SUMMARY:Revolutionary Books of the Algerian Independence Struggle
DESCRIPTION:In 1958\, an underground publishing house printed La Question\, a journalist’s firsthand account of his torture by the French military. It became the first book to be censored in France since the 18th century. A military tribunal began action against the publisher for “attempted demoralization of the Army with intent to harm the defense of the nation.” Two weeks later\, a new Swiss publisher published its first book: La Question. This lecture\, by Ms. Sanam Amin\, PhD candidate\, Melbourne Law School\, draws on now out-of-print documents of activism supporting Algerian independence\, available in The University of Melbourne library.\n\nHeld in the Leigh Scott Room\, Baillieu Library.
