Public Libraries: power for the people

Libraries serving the public are achieving an extraordinary impact in 2026. New frontiers in supporting reading, connecting people to knowledge and providing services that address the big issues facing our communities across the world are at the forefront of developments.

As part of State Library Victoria’s 170th anniversary program, this special In Conversation event features Vicki McDonald AM FALIA, incoming Chief Executive Officer, State Library Victoria and Erik Boekesteijn, Senior Advisor at the National Library of the Netherlands.

Hosted by State Library Victoria’s Director, Collections and Chief Librarian, Roxanne Missingham, this live online discussion will explore the changing role and value of libraries serving the public.

Drawing on experiences in Australia and across the world, the conversation will highlight how libraries are changing – connecting people with ideas, history and each other, building new capabilities for individuals and nations.

Whether you are a researcher, library professional, student, or simply passionate about the role of libraries in public life, this is a unique opportunity to hear from internationally recognised leaders and reflect on the enduring importance of libraries.
