Young Adult
The now closed Centre for Youth Literature (CYL) aimed to connect Australian teens to books, writing, and each other. Based out of the State Library, CYL ran a wide range of programs and events – including the biennial Reading Matters conference, and the Inky Awards; an annual award for youth literature decided by young adults, which was the only book award of its kind in Australia.
In Footscray, you will find the 100 Story Building, a centre for young writers. They support young people’s writing and collaborative publishing endeavours through education, arts and social enterprise.
Over the years, Express Media has become an integral part of the community, helping young Australians under the age of 25 and offering opportunities for various writing, media and arts projects, including publishing Voiceworks magazine and awarding the Hachette Australia Prize. Express Media also presents the Scribe Nonfiction Prize for Young Writers and the Kat Muscat Fellowship.
#LoveOzYA is a grassroots movement comprised of some 300 individuals from various corners of Australian youth publishing, dedicated to celebrating our young adult literature. What started as a social media conversation and hashtag has turned into a campaign promoting international awareness of Aussie YA books and authors, and encouraging a national ‘Read Local’ attitude in Aussie teens.
