Zine scene
State Library Victoria
Join Self-made: zines and artist books curator Monica Syrette and State Library Arts Librarian John Stevens in an exclusive behind-the-scenes viewing of rare zines from the Library’s History of the Book Collection.
Speakers
Monica Syrette attended the Canberra Institute of the Arts in the late 1980s when the city was a major centre for artists books in Australia. In the 1990s she worked at Sydney independent music retailer Waterfront Records, ordering zines from local and international makers and distributors. Monica was archivist at Arts Project Australia and assistant curator at the Grainger Museum, founded by composer and pianist Percy Grainger. Monica is curator of Self-made: zines and artist books, on display at State Library Victoria from 11 August to 12 November 2017.
John Stevens is a librarian at State Library Victoria and chair at Sticky Institute. He is passionate about connecting people with resources, and in particular with the Library’s zine collection, the largest public collection of its kind in Australia. John particularly admires zines' lo-fi aesthetic – hand-drawn or hand-sewn – and their often quirky contents.
